I'm a little disappointed.
It’s been great. It really has. Much better than 2010 for sure. But it’s dropped off a bit. Like teams have actually realised this is serious. Like players aren’t just playing. They’re calculating. Thinking. Like it’s a chess game.
In a way it’s very similar to Liverpool’s season. The first 3 quarters of the season were mad. Absolutely mad. 3-5 at the Britannia. What’s all that about? Algeria winning 4-2. What? 0-5 at White Hart Lane. Mad. Holland beating the holders 5-1. WHAT’S GOING ON?
Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal
Germany 4-0 Portugal
Liverpool 4-3 Swansea
France 5-2 Switzerland
Cardiff 3-6 Liverpool
Nigeria 2-3 Argentina
The list goes on…
The football was end to end. It was crazy. See how many we can score. We’ll score more than you. Free-flowing football. Pace. Power. Goals. Then something weird happened.
Liverpool started winning ugly. Not spectacularly. 2-1 against Sunderland.
Games drag on to extra time.
It was tense and exciting to be a Liverpool fan at that time. Fine margins.
But on the outside, for the neutral, it’s just a bit boring.
Okay, penalties are fun because they don’t come around very often but even then you get bored of the commentators telling the same things over and over whilst at the same time contradicting themselves…
“Only 44% of penalties are scored when missing could knock your team out compared to 99% if scoring means going through. All high penalties go in. Hard and low. Don’t change your mind. Clever penalty that, waited for the keeper to dive. Cheeky chip through the middle, very bold. Always go for the corners. The walk to the spot is the most nervous thing anyone could ever feel. Ever. Goalkeepers have nothing to lose. Blah blah blah…”
And don’t get me started on extra time… I can’t think of a single group of people who actually enjoy it. Players are tired and getting cramp. No one wants to make a mistake. Managers are nervous. Supporters are tense and silent. Neutrals are just waiting for penalties. Refs just want to go home.
It’s the purgatory for football.
And the games that don’t end in extra time are just as boring.
The four quarter finals had a total of 5 goals in them. FIVE.
And THREE of them were scored in Brazil vs Colombia!
The World Cup has been Hodged. His ghost lives on to haunt the tournament. It’s the only explanation. Or that Suarez took all the madness with him when he was banished from all of football.
The teams who are left were the 4 teams I DIDN’T want to win. Brazil seem to be forcing themselves to win. Germany are so efficient they’re dull. Holland have Robben, Van Persie and Van Gaal all in the same team. I’m sick of everyone loving Messi.
It’s a lose, lose, lose, lose situation for me.
France are mad but out. Uruguay are equally mad but no Suarez and out. Colombia would’ve been perfect. James has stolen my heart. But they’re out. Costa Rica have taken the last dregs of madness with them as they limped out last night.
It’s all falling apart. This mad World Cup was supposed to have a mad finale to top all mad finales. Instead the dream is over.
Kind of like Liverpool’s finale last season.
And now Suarez is banned. Great. And he’s leaving. Just great. I miss him already.
