They were brought in to enhance our attack. Frankly, our attack doesn’t need enhancing, so they’re doing it for other clubs. It’s possible we could never see these two in a Liverpool shirt again, but should we?
Well first of all it would be a shame. No one likes to see players leave the club when they’ve made such an effort to be a part of it. Borini is certainly a part of this group, given his incredibly passionate celebrations and high work rate. Assaidi.. Well I’m not sure anyone knows if he tried for Liverpool, we barely ever saw him for reasons only people on the inside know about.
But their loan spells has complicated things. They’ve given us a dilemma - a welcome dilemma that I shall tackle with some caution: Both are considered to have done well for their respective clubs. But here are some stats for you to get your teeth into:

This may not mean much to you, a table filled with random numbers, what’s that all about? But 6 goals in 32 appearances for Fabio Borini isn’t exactly explosive and 33% accuracy doesn’t set off fireworks either. Assaidi’s stats are much the same but could be given some slack due to where he plays, slightly wider than Borini who usually features to the left or right of centre.
I concede that some of this is down to the players they play with and inexperience in the Premier League, but I can’t see any way that Borini could break into the Liverpool first team when Iago Aspas has only started 5 games in the BPL. Although Borini has more potential than Aspas, that isn’t saying much as Iago’s spent most games this season on the bench, yet has still only made 8 substitute appearances in all competitions.
As the weeks go by it’s looking more and more likely that Liverpool will be involved in the Champions League next season *touch wood* and frankly a bench of Moses, Alberto, Aspas and Kelly just won’t cut it. So why should Borini be included?
Moreover why should Assaidi be included? He’s scored some glorious goals and looked very impressive for Mark Hughes’ Stoke side, but Brendan Rodgers isn’t a mug, there’s going to be a reason why the #FINDASSAIDI was doing it’s rounds on the Twittersphere this time last year. I agree that Borini and Assaidi may be better choices off the bench instead of Moses and Aspas but putting it harshly I would be upset if we still had those sorts of players on the bench next September.
The Champions League is far from a walk in the park, as the English teams have spectacularly proven in recent weeks. Neither is Europa League as Liverpool found out last February. I would argue, with the exception of one club (Guess which one), Liverpool have a weaker squad than all those English teams participating in the CL right now. So how do you think we’re are going to fare when some of our best attacking options from the bench are Fabio Borini and Oussama Assaidi?
My point is, no matter how promising or how much they’ve strived to prove themselves to the Anfield faithful, I just don’t think they are the right calibre of player that Liverpool should be looking to sign if we want to take this whole ‘Champions Elect’ thing seriously. I’m afraid to say it, but I’ve got a hunch both of them will be grazing on pastures new come September. And as I said, that’s a real shame.
